Scary Video from SeanFilms

Happy Halloween.

Flashback Friday: TRON Trailer (1982)

A new feature on Toolfarm Inspirations is Flash Back Friday, where we'll show you some of the best videos, commercials and films of the 70s, 80s and 90s (and maybe even older!) These videos will feature interesting visual effects that will either stand the test of time or will look dated as the day they were made. Either way, we promise to post some interesting stuff.

If you have any good suggestions for Flash Back Friday, email michele [at]

First up, the TRON trailer from 1982. Let me first say that I've never seen TRON. It was always a boy thing when I was growing up, so I never saw it. After watching the trailer, I MUST see it! Wow, look at those graphics! I remember how cool they were supposed to be when the film first came out. Look at those motorcycles! They look like an old video game - of course, that's probably the idea. Some of the effects haven't held up too well, but other effects are very stylish and look pretty cool. I'm digging the suits and the logo animation kicks ass.

My Territory - Grand Popo Football Club

Fantastic, mindblowingly cool motion graphics from cyriac, a freelance animator based in Brighton UK. I love the textures and how it just keeps moving! The octopus and undersea life is especially impressive.

Positive for Negative - Sleepyhead

Fun video for the song Positive for Negative by the band Sleepyheads, out of Manila, Phillipines. Director/animator Lara Agulto and director/illustrator Louie Cordero combine live action with animated elements.

L'homme 100 têtes - 3ème prix Panasonic'Art 2008

For the contest "Transformation : Live-React", Julien Lassort and Matthieu Burlot explored the human face, the most exposed and personal part of the human body. Their dynamic portrayal of "1000 and one faces" is a mosaic of portraits and emotions that plays off of the power of faces seen close up. Julien Fargo composed the melody that encapsulates the film.

The Day the Earth Stood Still Trailer

Here is the 5 minute trailer for the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, staring Keanu Reeves as a deadpan alien-in-the-shape-of-a-human bad guy. The effects look fantasic. It comes out in December.

Khoda - Reza Dolatabadi

This award-winning film was Reza Dolatabadi's graduation film. His goal was to make each frame of this psychological thriller look like a painting. It's pretty amazing.

Is It Me, Or Do You Love My Hair? - White Gold

The lyrics are hysterically funny. Is this guy for real or is this a only milk commercial? I really have no idea, but the visuals are larger than life and completely fabulous. This song is an instant classic!

Monkey Bee: A Short Film by Jamie Hewlett

Jamie Hewlett has created a music video for Monkey Bee, the first single from the "Monkey: Journey to the West". The album is a collaboration with Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorrilaz). They tried to make the video look like a 70s film, which I don't think it does, but I do think it looks fantastic. It's visually stunning - very rich and colorful.

This one is better when viewed in high quality and I was looking for something better than YouTube, but didn't find anything yet.... probably because this is a "YouTube Premiere".

Here's a Making of Monkey Bee video too - shot on 35mm.

Mini Pop- Like I Do

The Music Video for "Like I Do" by Minipop. Directed by Andrew Huang. Not too keen on the band itself, but I'm liking the animation style, and thought it was worth a mention. Andrew Huang's portfolio has some nice VFX, installation and traditional art work.

Mike Monday - Catnip

A trippy cool music video for Mike Monday's Catnip, on the album Songs without Words, which came out in September 2008. It was animated by Drunk Park and Joe Hamilton. I just bought my new cat a few little catnip toys. I wonder if she's seeing this sort of psychedelia?

Another Way to Die - Jack White & Alicia Keys

This is the new one for the next James Bond film, Quantum of Solace. Who is going to be James Bond this time? No idea. This video has some awesome use of what looks like Particular or 3D Stroke and some great transitions. My guess is that the whole thing was shot over green screen and keyed.

Great video, but I'm not sure about the song. I've always been a huge fan of Jack White, but this is an unexpected duet. Maybe the song is a grower. I did love his duet with Loretta Lynn, Portland, Oregon.

Fleet Foxes - He Doesn't Know Why

A low-key video for the Fleet Foxes, who happen to be playing in my hometown while I'm at the VidExpo in Denver this week. Every time I travel, some great band comes to town. Why is that?!

This was directed by Grandchildren and has a really mellow 70's feel, like James at 15. Remember that show? The video has a warm brown film look and very long dissolves. The hairstyles on the band make it even more 70s. Okay, not the most exciting video I've ever posted, but it's a beautiful song and the mood suits it perfectly.

I absolutely love to make gourmet food and am a pretty experienced cook but this site called, geared toward beginners in the kitchen, really caught my attention. It has cool videos that show you how to prepare food - all done very stylishly in stop motion.
